Introduction:
A great project you could make for Halloween or any spooky event would be this origami crow. This crow can also be a raven, a cowbird, or any bird type if you use any other colored paper besides black. Once finished, the bird can be placed on any flat surface since it can stand on its own two feet. Make it into an awesome decoration in your front yard for trick-or-treating or an eye-catching décor in any Halloween parties.
If you’re familiar with making a traditional origami bird such as the crane, then this origami crow may be an easy task for you. Like the folding procedures of a Japanese crane, we will use the bird fold or bird base method to make this wonderful origami bird.
Fold the paper into a square base
You will need a square piece of paper to make this origami bird. It is best to use dark paper so it would resemble a crow or a raven. The first step is to make a bird base which is a common origami fold to make various origami birds.
Make a square base by folding the paper diagonally to the left and the right. Then, crease the paper well and unfold it.
The next step is to make crease marks horizontally and vertically. Mountain fold the paper crosswise and lengthwise in half. Crease well and unfold.
Collapse the paper along the crease marks made. It will also help if you bring the top left and bottom right corners together. This will form a square base. Now rotate it into a diamond.
You have now made the square base of the bird fold! To create the bird base, we need to make a petal fold.
Make a petal fold
Fold the left and right corners to the center. Fold the top layer ONLY.
Fold the top corner down to the center.
Unfold the second and topmost layer.
After unfolding, flip it over to the other side.
Again, Fold the left and right corners to the center. Fold the top layer ONLY.
Same as on the other side, fold the top corner down to the center.
Unfold it again and gently lift the bottom corner of the top layer ONLY.
Keep pulling it gently.
You have now made a petal fold. Repeat it on the other side as well.
Gently lift the bottom corner of the top layer ONLY to the top.
Now you have completed the petal fold, you have also made the bird base of the paper crow!
Create the feet of the paper crow
First, let’s make the feet of the crow. Fold the bottom corner right triangle outwards diagonally to the side.
Do the same on the left side as well to make the other feet.
You have now made the feet of the origami bird! Re-fold the feet slightly outward so it would look like the next image.
Lastly, give the origami bird a beak
Fold the top corner of the outer flap downwards.
Fold the origami crow lengthwise in half.
To make it's beak, make an inside reverse fold on the origami’s top part.
Make an inside reverse fold by prying open the top tip. Then push it down inwards to the center. Flatten it after.
Your origami crow is done!
Extra Tips
- Attach it to a string or place it on any flat surface to make an awesome décor.
- We usually see black crows and ravens, but their feathers actually have a purple, blue or green iridescence to them. Choose what colors you'd like for your crow to be!
- If you're not into crows or ravens, try to experiment with other colors of origami paper to make various types of birds. We hope you had fun making this!
